STAND UP — SAFELY & STRATEGICALLY

Organizing Safe Protests Starts with You

Hey y’all — Daisy here. organizing safe protests no kings
October 18 is coming fast, and I’m not just talking about another protest — I’m talking about a moment. The “No Kings” protest isn’t just about one issue. It’s about power, about democracy, about reminding this country that the people still decide how this story goes.

But showing up means more than just being loud. It means being ready — physically, mentally, legally, and strategically. So this week, me and my friends have been getting organized. And if you’re planning to join the resistance — on October 18 or anywhere down the line — here’s how you can get ready too.

🧠 1. Know Your Rights (and Keep Them Handy)

The number one rule of peaceful protest? Know your rights before you step into the street.
Groups like the ACLU and National Lawyers Guild have your back — but only if you know what you’re protected by.

💬 Pro tip: Write the number for a local legal hotline on your arm in Sharpie before you march. Your phone can die — your rights don’t.

🥾 2. Plan Your Route, Buddy System, and Exit Strategy

No, it’s not “paranoid.” It’s prepared.
Before every march, our crew checks:
✅ Meeting points
✅ Evacuation routes
✅ Rest zones
✅ Emergency meetup spots

And we never — ever — go alone.

Bring a friend, text your route to someone you trust, and set up a check-in time. You don’t have to be scared to be smart.

🎒 3. Pack the Resistance Kit

Here’s what’s in my protest backpack this week (straight out of the Civil Disobedience Preparedness Guide):

  • 🧴 Water & snacks (energy keeps morale high)

  • 😷 Mask (for privacy and protection from irritants)

  • 🧤 Goggles or bandana (for pepper spray)

  • 🧃 Electrolytes — not energy drinks

  • 📱 Portable phone charger

  • 🪪 ID (optional, depending on your comfort level)

  • ✍️ Marker for emergency contact info

  • 🧻 Hand sanitizer, menstrual supplies, and wipes

  • 💚 Small first aid kit (Band-Aids, saline, gloves)

If you’re organizing a larger group, consider buddy medic training through resources like:

🪧 4. Message Discipline: The Power of Visuals & Unity

Posters matter. Messaging matters.
Every sign tells a story, and every chant creates echo. If you want your voice to resonate, coordinate with others ahead of time.

  • 🖋️ Choose short, clear messages. (“No Kings.” “Power Belongs to the People.” “Silence = Consent.”)

  • 🎨 Keep your signs readable from a distance.

  • 📸 Designate one or two people to document safely — but protect faces and personal details.

📣 5. De-Escalate, Don’t Isolate

Tensions rise fast in the streets — especially when cameras or counterprotesters show up.
We train with this mindset: We take care of us.

  • Stay calm. Step back.

  • If someone’s in distress, check in before reacting.

  • Film responsibly — for safety, not for clout.

  • Assign a de-escalator in every group to talk, not yell, when things heat up.

💬 6. After the Protest: Debrief, Reflect, Reconnect

Movements don’t end when the march does.
After every protest, our team sits down to talk about what worked — and what didn’t. We text people we met, share footage safely, and log any incidents.

💬 Ask yourself:

  • What felt empowering?

  • What moments need to be learned from?

  • What’s next — not just for you, but for the movement?

🌎 7. Remember Why We March

This isn’t about chaos. It’s about conscience.
When we say No Kings, we mean no unchecked power. No leaders above the law. No silence when democracy’s under siege.

We show up because the people before us did — and because the ones after us will need to see that we did too.

October 18 No Kings isn’t just a protest. It’s a promise.

So gather your crew. Print your signs. Charge your phones.
And remember — courage is contagious.
